Why every site needs an XML sitemap

An XML sitemap is a machine-readable file that lists every URL you want indexed, along with metadata like the last modification date, change frequency and a relative priority. Search engines such as Google, Bing and Yandex use this file to discover new pages faster, understand which content updates often, and crawl your site more efficiently. Without a sitemap, important pages — especially deep ones with few internal links — can remain invisible to search for weeks.

Our Sitemap Generator creates a clean, Google-validated sitemap from any list of URLs. Just paste them above (one per line), tweak the change frequency and priority, then download the resulting sitemap.xml. Duplicate URLs are removed automatically so your sitemap stays lean.

How to submit your sitemap

  1. Upload sitemap.xml to the root of your domain.
  2. Reference it from your robots.txt.
  3. Open Google Search Console → Sitemaps → paste the URL → Submit.
  4. Repeat in Bing Webmaster Tools.

Sitemap best practices

  • Only include canonical, indexable URLs — skip redirects and 404s.
  • Maximum 50,000 URLs and 50MB per sitemap file.
  • Use lastmod dates that actually change when content changes.
  • Don't pad priorities to 1.0 for every page — be realistic.
